The belt sequence is as follows:
White
Purple
Brown
Black
Advancing in rank is generally much, much slower than other styles. A decade of consistent training is typically not enough to earn a black belt.
Our head instructor, John, trains with a reputable gym that has been in business for over 20 years, and they've only handed out a few brown belts in their history. A blue belt there requires more effort than a black belt from many other gyms (especially from other styles)
It is generally accepted in the Jiu Jitsu community that purple or brown belts can be instructors, and sometimes even blue belts (especially in the context of beginner classes)
Black is the highest rank. There are no degrees.
